Follow-up stacked on #274 (wenqil/install-dev-sdk5, currently 1976e92). Keep this draft based on that branch until #274 merges, then retarget it to main.

A configured SDK 5 build already contains provider metadata before its Python extension is built. Registering that directory can report success while imports fail. A failed registration replacement can also remove the previous working hook. This change requires a completed provider and replaces its path registration atomically.

  • Validate the entry-point target, distribution identity fields, package initializer, and extension without importing provider code. Bound metadata reads and reject shared provider roots, whose registrations cannot be removed independently.
  • Prefer metadata over stale legacy hooks in the same build; select the newest completed provider deterministically. After a build on demand, inspect the directory returned by the build operation.
  • Preserve the existing registration if writing or replacing its .pth fails. Remove the obsolete legacy helper only after replacement succeeds.
  • Reject an installed copy of the same package in the destination site directory before it can shadow the development build. Report an actionable error instead of successful registration.
  • Retain Fix install --dev for SDK 5 Modules and clean up CI checks #274's regression tests and legacy-hook support. Add coverage for preview, replacement, incomplete/invalid metadata, build selection, installed-package conflicts, and independent uninstall after a build disappears. Document the behavior and metadata-helper requirement.

Validation was run on My_Desktop, Ubuntu 24.04 x86_64, Python 3.12, RTX A5000, with Holoscan SDK 5.0.0. The SDK image was pinned to nvcr.io/nvidia/clara-holoscan/holoscan@sha256:faa23a3a2479697fd64babcb27d28cf97f21d5da54d65c92225f8a9b0d99264a.

  • pre-commit run --all-files: passed, including a repeat after the configuration-only parent update.
  • Full unit suite: 745 passed.
  • CLI wheel build, content assertions, and clean installed-wheel smoke: passed.
  • Native development registration: explicit prebuilt install, repeat, switch between builds, and CLI build on demand passed. Fresh processes verified both import orders, class identity, compiled-extension location, and provider metadata.
  • Independent uninstall passed with a second module still importable, including cleanup after the selected build directory was moved. Build output was retained.
  • Generated Python suites: 20 passed across development registration, the CMake build tree, component installation, and default installation. Installed consumers had no source/build trees mounted.
  • Default container route: preview, install, separate consumer processes, and uninstall passed using the installed CLI wheel.

No Module wheel or Debian package was used for these lifecycle checks. CI provides the remaining Python-version coverage.

Walkthrough

Development installs now discover Python providers from SDK metadata and legacy hooks. The command validates and selects builds, registers modern providers through .pth files, and preserves legacy support. Tests and documentation cover registration, replacement, conflicts, dry runs, and uninstall behavior.

Changes

Development Install

Layer / File(s) Summary
Provider metadata and discovery
src/holoscan_cli/commands/install.py, tests/unit/test_install_cmd.py
The command reads bounded metadata, validates provider names and package contents, combines metadata providers with legacy hooks, and selects the newest valid source.
Build selection and registration
src/holoscan_cli/commands/install.py
The install flow handles automatic and explicit build directories. Modern providers use atomic .pth registration, conflict checks, stale-registration replacement, and cleanup. Legacy hook installation remains supported.
Registration validation and behavior coverage
tests/unit/test_install_cmd.py, tests/unit/test_create_module.py, CLI_REFERENCE.md
Tests cover metadata registration, build selection, conflicts, dry runs, replacement failures, incomplete builds, virtual environments, and independent uninstall. The CLI reference describes the updated provider and registration behavior.

🟡 Minor · Check the effective import path before registering the development build. · install.py:682-710

src/holoscan_cli/commands/install.py:682-710
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Check the effective import path before registering the development build.

_install_metadata_dev_source checks only site_dir. If PYTHONPATH or another earlier sys.path entry contains holoscan_<slug>, the check can pass, but a new interpreter imports that provider before the path added by the .pth file. The development build is then registered but not used.

Check the effective import path in addition to the explicit site_dir check.
