docs: add release lines guides and reference - #953
Documents release lines, from openchoreo/openchoreo#5162: more lines of a component, built, released and deployed next to it in the same environments.
New pages:
Developer guide, Release lines: the implicit default line every component has, what a line can override, creating, building, deploying, promoting and deleting a line, depending on a line (including occ remote), and reading logs, metrics, costs and delivery insights per line.
Platform engineer guide, Component types, Release lines: how a component type names its objects and labels its pods so its components can have lines, and what a build workflow needs for a line.
API reference, ReleaseLine: the resource's fields, status and conditions.
Updated pages:
Concepts and the examples catalog: release lines in the developer abstractions, and the release-lines sample.
Workload, ReleaseBinding and ComponentRelease references: the optional, immutable spec.owner.releaseLine, and dependencies that name a line.
CEL context variables:metadata.releaseLineName, and the pod labels a line's podSelectors carry.
CLI reference:occ component releaseline, --release-line on build, deploy, logs, exec and the file-system generators, --all-release-lines on logs, and --local component@line for occ remote.
MCP servers: the release line tools, and the release_line and all_release_lines arguments of the observability tools.
Authorization, audit logging, cost insights and delivery insights: the releaseline:* actions and the default roles that get them, the resource.release_line audit field, and line scoping of costs and DORA metrics.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Added a guide to creating, configuring, building, deploying, promoting, and managing named component release lines alongside the main line.
Expanded CLI, API, and MCP references with release-line operations, permissions, resource relationships, and line-specific targeting.
Documented release-line behavior for component types, workloads, deployments, audit logs, and cost and delivery insights.
Added a release-line example to the catalog and updated component, authorization, and observability references.
Added a v1.3-to-v1.4 upgrade guide covering release-line prerequisites and upgrade steps.
The documentation introduces Release Lines as named component lines alongside an implicit main line. It describes their resource model, configuration, component type requirements, lifecycle operations, permissions, audit fields, observability options, and upgrade requirements.

- Line 36: Update the ComponentRelease naming table to document both the
file-system generator’s component-name, date, and version format and the
API/controller component, line, and hash format; identify the workflow
associated with each, including the `occ componentrelease generate` workflow. Do
not present the file-system format as line-specific.
Review comments at @docs/reference/api/platform/releasebinding.md:
- Line 102: Update the `ReleaseLinePodLabelOverlap` description to document both
triggers: the line’s pods carry `openchoreo.dev/component-uid` or its rendered
selectors use that label. Preserve the existing explanation of the other
reported conditions and that the binding is not deployed.
Review comments at @docs/reference/mcp-servers.mdx:
- Around line 320-321: Update the Observability Plane MCP tool list to include a
description and parameters for query_component_events if it is supported;
otherwise, remove query_component_events from the release_line paragraph. Keep
the reference consistent with the available operation.
- Around line 320-321: Update the release-line documentation for
query_http_metrics, query_resource_metrics, query_traces, query_trace_spans, and
query_costs to state that these queries return 501 Not Implemented when the
observability module does not support release lines.
- Line 90: Update the release-line permissions sentence to scope access to each
tool: `list_release_lines` and `get_release_line` require `releaseline:view`,
`create_release_line` requires `releaseline:create`, `patch_release_line`
requires `releaseline:update`, and `delete_release_line` requires

## Explore What OpenChoreo Created
When you applied those three resources, OpenChoreo's controllers reconciled them and created a chain of resources automatically. Let's walk through each one.
### The Resource Chain
### 1. Component
The Component declares your application and links it to a platform-defined template (ClusterComponentType). For this sample, OpenChoreo automatically creates a release and deploys it to the environments in the deployment pipeline.
`kubectl get component greeter-service -n default
`
Inspect the status to see which ComponentRelease was created:
`kubectl get component greeter-service -n default -o jsonpath='{.status.latestRelease.name}'
`
`greeter-service-5d7f658d9c
`
The suffix is a hash derived from the release spec, so your value may differ.
### 2. ComponentRelease
The ComponentRelease is an immutable snapshot that freezes the Component's configuration, including the ComponentType spec, Trait definitions, parameters, and Workload. This enables reliable rollbacks and audit trails.
`kubectl get componentrelease -n default
`
The name (`greeter-service-5d7f658d9c`) includes a hash of the spec, so a new release is only created when something actually changes.
### 3. ReleaseBinding
The ReleaseBinding binds a ComponentRelease to a specific environment. It references the release name and the target environment (`development`). This is where environment-specific overrides (like replica counts or resource limits) can be applied.
`kubectl get releasebinding greeter-service-development -n default
`
The name follows the convention `{component}-{environment}`.
### 4. Underlying Kubernetes Resources
From the ReleaseBinding, OpenChoreo renders the final Kubernetes manifests and applies them to a data plane namespace:
* Deployment: manages the pod running your container image
* Service: provides stable networking for the pod
* HTTPRoute: configures the API gateway to route external traffic to your service
`kubectl get deployment,svc,httproute -A -l openchoreo.dev/component=greeter-service
`
Notice these resources live in a data plane namespace (e.g., `dp-default-default-development-*`), not in the `default` namespace where you created your Component. This separation is by design: the control plane manages intent while the data plane runs workloads.
## Test the Running Service
Verify the service is accessible through the gateway:
`curl http://development-default.openchoreoapis.localhost:19080/greeter-service-http/greeter/greet
`
`Hello, Stranger!
`
Try it with a name parameter:
`curl "http://development-default.openchoreoapis.localhost:19080/greeter-service-http/greeter/greet?name=OpenChoreo"
`
`Hello, OpenChoreo!
`
The URL structure is: `http://{environment}-{namespace}.{gateway-host}/{endpoint-name}/{path}`
## Summary
You applied a Component and Workload, and OpenChoreo automatically created the full deployment chain:
Component → ComponentRelease (immutable snapshot) → ReleaseBinding (binds to environment) → Deployment + Service + HTTPRoute (running on data plane)
To learn more about these abstractions, see Resource Relationships and Runtime Model.

# Build and Release Workflows
When using a GitOps approach, deploying a Component requires three resources in your GitOps repository: a Workload (container image and endpoint configuration), a ComponentRelease (immutable release snapshot), and a ReleaseBinding (binds the release to an Environment). Creating these by hand for every build is tedious and error-prone.
OpenChoreo provides build-and-release Workflows that automate this entire cycle. They build a container image from source code, generate the required resources using the `occ` CLI, and open a pull request in your GitOps repository. Once the PR is merged, your GitOps operator (e.g., Flux CD) syncs the resources to the cluster.
## How It Works
All build-and-release workflows follow a two-phase architecture:
Phase 1 — Build: Clones the source repository, builds a container image using the workflow-specific method (Docker, Buildpacks, or Node.js + nginx), and pushes it to the container registry.
Phase 2 — Release: Clones the GitOps repository, creates a feature branch (`release/<component>-<timestamp>`), runs `occ` CLI commands to generate Workload, ComponentRelease, and ReleaseBinding resources, and opens a pull request for review.
## Generating Resources with the CLI
During the release phase, workflows use three `occ` CLI commands sequentially to generate the GitOps resources:
### 1. Create Workload
Creates or updates the Workload resource with the container image reference and endpoint configuration from the workload descriptor:
`occ workload create \
--mode file-system \
--root-dir <gitops-repo-path> \
--project <project> \
--component <component> \
--image <container-image> \
--descriptor <workload-descriptor-path> # optional
`
### 2. Generate ComponentRelease
Generates an immutable ComponentRelease snapshot from the Component, Workload, ComponentType, and Trait definitions:
`occ componentrelease generate \
--mode file-system \
--root-dir <gitops-repo-path> \
--project <project> \
--component <component> \
--name <release-name> \
--output-path <output-path>
`
### 3. Generate ReleaseBinding
Generates a ReleaseBinding that binds the ComponentRelease to the target Environment:
`occ releasebinding generate \
--mode file-system \
--root-dir <gitops-repo-path> \
--project <project> \
--component <component> \
--component-release <release-name>
`
You can run these commands manually outside of workflows to generate resources in your GitOps repository. For the full list of flags and options, see the CLI Reference.</excerpt>

## CRD Commands
All OpenChoreo CRDs follow a consistent command pattern. The CLI dynamically generates `list`, `create`, and `delete` subcommands for each CRD based on the Kubernetes API schema. Each resource supports:
* `list`: List all resources of this type (scoped to organization/project context where applicable)
* `<name>`: Get details of a specific resource by name
* `create <name>`: Create a new resource using `--set` flags for configuration
* `delete <name>`: Delete a resource by name
Additional resource-specific commands (like `scaffold`, `deploy`, `promote`, `build`, `logs`, etc.) are implemented as needed for specialized workflows.

<excerpt>citeturn0search1 [wordlim: 200] Published: last year; Crawled: 2 months ago; When you create a release, OpenChoreo takes the Component, its Workload configuration, the selected ComponentType, and any attached Traits, and inlines all of them into a single CR. ... ComponentRelease is the frozen, versioned definition of what we want to run, and the ReleaseBinding defines how that release runs in a specific environment. -- Together, these resources define a consistent and extensible model for creating, versioning, deploying, and promoting software across environments in OpenChoreo, with clear boundaries between developer workflows and platform operator responsibilities.
* Decoupling Argo Workflows from the CI plane to allow for alternative workflow engines
In the last few days, we brought these proposals together and reviewed them as a whole. The goal was to connect the designs at a high level, ensure consistency in terminology and CRD names, and confirm that the overall model remains intuitive. The next step is to review each proposal in detail to ensure consistency across all aspects, including field names in APIs/CRs, documentation, code, and so on. Here is a summary of the discussions and conclusions.
## End-to-End Flow (High Level)
Platform operators define the foundational platform setup:
* Data planes
* Environments (dev/staging/prod)
* CI pipelines
* Default ComponentTypes and Traits (or they can use the built-ins)
Developers then:
* Create Projects and Components
* Commit code → CI builds → a ComponentRelease is generated
* The release is automatically deployed to the default environment (usually dev) via a ReleaseBinding
From there, platform operators can:
Examples of what Traits can do:
* Configure autoscaling rules
* Set network policies
* Ingress routing
* Apply resource limits or rollout/upgrade strategies
## ComponentRelease
A ComponentRelease is an immutable snapshot of a component at a specific point in time. When you create a release, OpenChoreo takes the Component, its Workload configuration, the selected ComponentType, and any attached Traits, and inlines all of them into a single CR. This snapshot works like a lock file, preserving the exact state of the component so that the release remains stable and repeatable, even if the original Component, Workload, Type, or Traits are later updated. Because a ComponentRelease is immutable, it supports a 'create once and deploy many times' workflow. You can build and validate a release once, and then safely deploy the same release across multiple environments (dev → staging → prod) without worrying that something has drifted or changed underneath. To deploy a specific release to an environment, you bind it using a ReleaseBinding CR.
## Environment
An Environment represents a target runtime space, such as development (dev), staging, or production (prod). It encapsulates infrastructure-specific configurations, such as cluster bindings, gateway setups, secrets, and policies. Environments:
* These are where actual deployments occur.
* May have constraints or validations (e.g., only approved workloads may run in prod).
## ReleaseBinding
A ReleaseBinding connects a ComponentRelease to a specific Environment. This is what actually deploys a release into a data plane. But it’s more than just a reference. ReleaseBinding also provides platform operators with a means to override configuration for a specific environment, such as values defined in the ComponentType or Traits. This is where environment-specific differences reside: scaling in production versus development, network policies, resource limits, and so on, while the ComponentRelease itself remains unchanged. Once a ReleaseBinding is created, the ReleaseBinding controller handles the rest: it generates the necessary infrastructure resources (Deployments, Services, Policies, etc.) and applies them to the target data plane. ComponentRelease is the frozen, versioned…[truncated]</excerpt>

## Build and Release Workflows
The following build-and-release workflows automate the build and deployment of OpenChoreo components in a GitOps setup:
1. docker-gitops-release
2. google-cloud-buildpacks-gitops-release
3. react-gitops-release
All three workflows follow the same high-level pattern. The main difference is how the container image is built.
Build phase
1. Clone the source repository (private repositories are supported through a git token).
2. Build the container image using the workflow-specific method.
3. Push the image to the container registry.
4. Extract the workload descriptor from the source repository.
Release phase
1. Clone the GitOps repository.
2. Create a feature branch (`release/<component>-<timestamp>`).
3. Generate the GitOps resources (`Workload`, `ComponentRelease`, and `ReleaseBinding`) using the `occ` CLI.
4. Commit the changes, push the branch, and create a pull request.
Merging the PR triggers the CD tool to sync the changes, deploying the component to the target environment.
Tip
These workflows require git tokens stored in a `ClusterSecretStore`:
Secret Key | Required By | Purpose
--- | --- | ---
`git-token` | Build & release workflows | Clone private source repos
`gitops-token` | All workflows | Push branches and create PRs in GitOps repo

Distinguish file-system-generated release names from controller-generated names.
The file-system generator uses <component-name>-<YYYYMMDD>-<version>, while the API/controller convention is <component>-<line>-<hash>. The table currently lists only the latter while the guide links to occ componentrelease generate. Document both formats and identify their workflows. Do not describe the file-system format as <component>-<line>-<date>-<n> unless the line-specific naming contract is documented.

Update the ComponentRelease naming table to document both the file-system

component, line, and hash format; identify the workflow associated with each,
including the `occ componentrelease generate` workflow. Do not present the

A binding of a release line also reports `ReleaseLineNotFound` when its line does not exist, `ReleaseLineNameCollision` when the line would render an object that another line of the component already renders, and `ReleaseLinePodLabelOverlap` when the line's pods would carry `openchoreo.dev/component-uid`. Such a binding is not deployed.

Include selector overlap in ReleaseLinePodLabelOverlap.
A line can report this condition when its rendered selectors use openchoreo.dev/component-uid, even if its pods do not carry that label. The current description can direct a platform engineer to inspect only pod labels and miss the selector that blocks deployment. Document both triggers. (github.com)

Scope the MCP release-line permissions to each tool.
The sentence lists all four release-line permissions as needed for the whole toolset. The tools perform separate operations, and the read-only tools need only releaseline:view. A read-only MCP client can read the sentence as a requirement for create, update, and delete permissions. Operators who follow it may grant broader roles than the tools need.

Update the release-line permissions sentence to scope access to each tool:
`list_release_lines` and `get_release_line` require `releaseline:view`,
`create_release_line` requires `releaseline:create`, `patch_release_line`
requires `releaseline:update`, and `delete_release_line` requires
`releaseline:delete`.

For a component with [release lines](../developer-guide/deploying-applications/release-lines.md), the component-scoped tools take a `release_line` argument that restricts the result to one line. `query_component_logs`, `query_component_events`, `query_http_metrics`, `query_resource_metrics`, `query_traces` and `query_trace_spans` need `component` and `environment` with it. `query_alerts`, `query_incidents`, `query_dora_metrics`, `query_dora_deployments`, `query_costs` and `query_recommendations` need only `component`. `default` selects the component's default line. Without `release_line`, a query covers the component's default line, and `all_release_lines` covers every line of the component.

Document the 501 behavior for unsupported line-scoped observability.
The developer guide states that one-line metrics, traces, and costs queries return 501 Not Implemented when the observability module does not support release lines. Add this limitation to the MCP reference so users do not misdiagnose a supported request as a transient API failure.

The ReleaseLine API defines named-line bindings as <component>-<line>-<environment>, which matches this guide. The ReleaseBinding API still documents <component>-<environment>, and the CLI example uses product-catalog-dev-binding. Update all references to the actual generated format. If default-line bindings use a different name, document that exception explicitly.

A line's endpoints get their own Service and gateway paths. With the default component types, they're named after the component and the line, followed by a hash of both, for example `/hello-next-9bfa5556-http` for the `http` endpoint of the `next` line of `hello`. The hash keeps a line's URLs apart from those of other components, and it doesn't change between releases. The line's ReleaseBinding lists its URLs under `status.endpoints`:

<title>Deploy and Explore | OpenChoreo</title>
<location>https://openchoreo.dev/docs/getting-started/deploy-and-explore/</location>
<excerpt>citeturn0search1 [wordlim: 200] Crawled: today; `kubectl get component greeter-service -n default -o jsonpath='{.status.latestRelease.name}' ... From the ReleaseBinding, OpenChoreo renders the final Kubernetes manifests and applies them to a data plane namespace: ... * HTTPRoute: configures the API gateway to route external traffic to your service

Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Document the ComponentType release-line policy.
A component cannot use release lines only because its templates are line-safe. The controller rejects a line when the referenced ComponentType disallows release lines and reports ReleaseLinesNotAllowed. Replace “Any component can have release lines, whatever its type” with the actual precondition. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Use a line-specific release name in the rollback example.
The generated name includes a stable line hash, but hello-next-7978978bc9 omits it. A reader who copies this command will not select a release generated under the naming convention documented above. - `query_audit_logs` — Query the audit trail: who did what, to which resource, and whether it was allowed; filter by actor (ID, type, issuer, session, entitlements), resource (type, namespace, environment, project, component, name), action, category, result, surface, operation ID, request ID and a search phrase, within a window of at most 366 days; optionally returns a timeline of record counts. Requires the cluster-scoped `auditlogs:view` permission. See [Audit Logging](../platform-engineer-guide/audit-logging.mdx)
- `query_platform_logs` — Query platform logs: everything one observability plane collects, addressed by raw Kubernetes coordinates, including OpenChoreo's own components, the third-party infrastructure deployed alongside them and user workloads; filter by cluster, Kubernetes namespace, pod, container, pod label selector (e.g. `openchoreo.dev/plane=controlplane`), log levels and a search phrase within a time range; optionally returns a breakdown of which clusters, namespaces, pods or containers produced the matches. Requires the cluster-scoped `platformlogs:view` permission. See [Platform Logs](../platform-engineer-guide/platform-logs.mdx)
For a component with [release lines](../developer-guide/deploying-applications/release-lines.md), the component-scoped tools take a `release_line` argument that restricts the result to one line. `query_component_logs`, `query_component_events`, `query_http_metrics`, `query_resource_metrics`, `query_traces` and `query_trace_spans` need `component` and `environment` with it. `query_alerts`, `query_incidents`, `query_dora_metrics`, `query_dora_deployments`, `query_costs` and `query_recommendations` need only `component`. `main` selects the component's main line. Without `release_line`, a query covers the component's main line, and `all_release_lines` covers every line of the component.

Document release lines: the implicit default line every component
has, adding lines with ReleaseLine, building, deploying, promoting
and depending on a line, and how a component type names its objects
per line. Observability views of a component cover its default line,
and allReleaseLines covers every line. Update the CLI, MCP, CEL and
resource references to match.

The release lines pages name a line's objects {component}-{line}-{hash}
as OpenChoreo does, its Workload, bindings and releases included, and
tag a line's builds v1-<line>-<commit>. Every component's implicit
line is called main across the docs, and a ReleaseLine can't be named
main or default.
Signed-off-by: chathuranga95 <siriwardhanachathuranga@gmail.com>
The release line guide and the CLI reference named a line's releases
without the line's hash. The guide also implied that --release rolls
a line back in any environment. Describe a rollback in pipeline order
and the autoDeploy hold that keeps it in the first environment.
Signed-off-by: chathuranga95 <siriwardhanachathuranga@gmail.com>
Add the v1.3 to v1.4 upgrade guide. An upgrade keeps the v1.3 default
component types and build workflows, which are not line-safe, so the
guide re-applies them, and covers custom types, authz roles and the
community module versions that support release lines. The release
lines guides point to it.
Correct the release line docs against the code:
- generate with --component alone covers only the main line
- turn autoDeploy off before a rollback, or the line rebinds its
latest release within seconds
- a line doesn't inherit the main line's Workload
- only runs started through OpenChoreo merge a line's workflow
parameters
- name both release name forms, the conditions a blocked binding
reports, and everything deleting a line removes
- list MCP permissions per tool, and document query_component_events,
status.endpoints and the releaseLine owner validation

L617: Same process as the data plane. Copy the cluster-gateway CA from the cert-manager Secret so the workflow plane's agent can connect to the control plane:
L618:
L619: `kubectl create namespace openchoreo-workflow-plane --dry-run=client -o yaml | kubectl apply -f -
L620: kubectl get secret cluster-gateway-ca -n openchoreo-control-plane \
L621: -o jsonpath='{.data.ca\.crt}' | base64 -d | \
L622: kubectl create configmap cluster-gateway-ca \
L623: --from-file=ca.crt=/dev/stdin \
L624: -n openchoreo-workflow-plane \
L625: --dry-run=client -o yaml | kubectl apply -f -
L626: `
L627: ### Install the Workflow Plane【63†】
L628:
L629: `helm upgrade --install openchoreo-workflow-plane oci://ghcr.io/openchoreo/helm-charts/openchoreo-workflow-plane \
L630: --version 1.3.2 \
L631: --namespace openchoreo-workflow-plane \
L632: --create-namespace \
L633: --set clusterAgent.tls.generateCerts=true \
L634: --set argo-workflows.images.tag=v4.0.15
L635: `
L636:
L637: note
L638: `argo-workflows.images.tag=v4.0.15` replaces the chart's default Argo Workflows v4.0.8, which still trusts the compromised eMudhra certificate authorities.
L639: #### Install Workflow Templates【64†】
L640:
L641: Build pipelines are defined as ClusterWorkflowTemplates. Each build workflow (docker, react, etc.) is composed from smaller shared templates, so you can swap out individual pieces without touching the rest.
L642: Start with the checkout step. This controls how source code is cloned. If your repos live behind a corporate proxy or need a custom auth flow, this is the template you would edit.
L643:
L644: `kubectl apply -f https://raw.githubusercontent.com/openchoreo/openchoreo/release-v1.3/samples/getting-started/workflow-templates/checkout-source.yaml
L645: `
L646: Next, install the build coordinator templates (docker, react, ballerina-buildpack, google-cloud-buildpacks):
L647:
L648: `kubectl apply -f https://raw.githubusercontent.com/openchoreo/openchoreo/release-v1.3/samples/getting-started/workflow-templates.yaml
L649: `
L650:
L651: Finally, install the publish step. This controls where built images get pushed. The default below uses 【65†ttl.sh†ttl.sh】, an anonymous ephemeral registry where images expire automatically.
L652:
L653: TTL.sh
L654: Images on ttl.sh expire after 24 hours. For production, use your cloud provider's registry (ECR, GAR, ACR). See 【66†Container Registry Configuration】.
L655:
L656: `kubectl apply -f https://raw.githubusercontent.com/openchoreo/openchoreo/release-v1.3/samples/getting-started/workflow-templates/publish-image.yaml
L657: `
L658: Install the generate-workload step. This template creates Workload CRs from build outputs via the API server. The `sed` commands replace the default k3d URLs with your control plane's gateway addresses:
L659:
L660: `curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/openchoreo/openchoreo/release-v1.3/samples/getting-started/workflow-templates/generate-workload.yaml \
L661: | sed "s#https://host.k3d.internal:8080/oauth2/token#https://thunder.${CP_BASE_DOMAIN}/oauth2/token#g" \
L662: | sed "s#http://host.k3d.internal:8080#https://api.${CP_BASE_DOMAIN}#g" \
L663: | kubectl apply -f -
L664: `
L665: ### Register the Workflow Plane【67†】
L666: The workflow plane references the same `default` ClusterSecretStore created in Step 1.
L667:
L668: `kubectl wait -n openchoreo-workflow-plane \
L669: --for=condition=Ready certificate/cluster-agent-workflowplane-tls --timeout=120s
L670: AGENT_CA=$(kubectl get secret cluster-agent-tls \
L671: -n openchoreo-workflow-plane -o jsonpath='{.data.ca\.crt}' | base64 -d)
L672: kubectl apply -f -…[truncated]</excerpt>

This controls where built images get pushed. The default below uses ttl.sh, an anonymous ephemeral registry where images expire automatically.
TTL.sh
Images on ttl.sh expire after 24 hours. For production, use your cloud provider's registry (ECR, GAR, ACR). See Container Registry Configuration.
`kubectl apply -f https://raw.githubusercontent.com/openchoreo/openchoreo/release-v1.3/samples/getting-started/workflow-templates/publish-image.yaml
`
Install the generate-workload step. This template creates Workload CRs from build outputs via the API server. The `sed` commands replace the default k3d URLs with your control plane's gateway addresses:
`curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/openchoreo/openchoreo/release-v1.3/samples/getting-started/workflow-templates/generate-workload.yaml \
| sed "s#https://host.k3d.internal:8080/oauth2/token#https://thunder.${CP_BASE_DOMAIN}/oauth2/token#g" \
| sed "s#http://host.k3d.internal:8080#https://api.${CP_BASE_DOMAIN}#g" \
k3s / Rancher Desktop
On k3s with the Docker runtime, the `generate-workload-cr` build step may fail with `crun: the requested cgroup controller 'pids' is not available`. The image build and push still succeed. Switching Rancher Desktop to the containerd runtime avoids this issue.
Workaround: manually create the Workload CR
Grab the image URL from the `publish-image` step and create the Workload CR yourself:
`IMAGE=$(kubectl get workflow greeting-service-build-01 -n workflows-default \
-o jsonpath='{.status.nodes}' | grep -o '"image":"[^"]*"' | head -1 | cut -d'"' -f4)
if [ -z "$IMAGE" ]; then
IMAGE=$(kubectl logs -n workflows-default \
-l workflows.argoproj.io/workflow=greeting-service-build-01 \
-c main --tail=50 2>/dev/null | grep -o 'ttl.sh[^ ]*' | tail -1)
fi
echo "Built image: $IMAGE"
kubectl apply -f - <<EOF

# Workload Generation
When a CI workflow builds a container image, the next step is creating a Workload CR in the control plane. The ClusterWorkflowTemplate calls the OpenChoreo API server directly to create or update the Workload resource.
## How It Works
The workflow step handles workload creation end-to-end by calling the OpenChoreo API server:
1. The CI workflow builds and publishes a container image
2. The workflow step generates a workload payload (using `occ workload create` to produce a local file, or by constructing the JSON directly)
3. The step obtains an OAuth access token via client credentials grant
4. The step calls `POST /api/v1/namespaces/{namespaceName}/workloads` to create the Workload
5. If the Workload already exists (HTTP 409), the step falls back to `PUT /api/v1/namespaces/{namespaceName}/workloads/{workloadName}` to update it
6. The API server creates or updates the Workload CR in the control plane
7. The step annotates the WorkflowRun with the workload CR and source origin, so the UI can display build details such as the container image and workload configuration
## Workflow Step Details
### Authentication
The workflow step authenticates with the API server using OAuth 2.0 client credentials:
`TOKEN_RESPONSE=$(curl -s --fail-with-body \
-X POST "${OAUTH_TOKEN_URL}" \
-H "Content-Type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded" \
-d "grant_type=client_credentials&client_id=${CLIENT_ID}&client_secret=${CLIENT_SECRET}")
ACCESS_TOKEN=$(echo "${TOKEN_RESPONSE}" | jq -r '.access_token')
`
The OAuth parameters (token URL, client ID, client secret) are provided as input parameters to the ClusterWorkflowTemplate step.
By default, OpenChoreo ships with ThunderID as the identity provider and a pre-configured OAuth client (`openchoreo-workload-publisher-client`) for development and testing. If you are using an external identity provider, refer to the Workload Publishing Credentials operations guide for setup instructions.
### Creating the Workload
After obtaining the token, the step calls the API server to create the Workload:
`curl -s -X POST "${API_URL}/api/v1/namespaces/${NAMESPACE_NAME}/workloads" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-H "Authorization: Bearer ${ACCESS_TOKEN}" \
-d @workload-cr.json
`
If the Workload already exists (HTTP 409 Conflict), the step updates it instead:
`curl -s -X PUT "${API_URL}/api/v1/namespaces/${NAMESPACE_NAME}/workloads/${WORKLOAD_NAME}" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-H "Authorization: Bearer ${ACCESS_TOKEN}" \
-d @workload-cr.json
`
### Annotating the WorkflowRun
After creating or updating the Workload, the step annotates the WorkflowRun with the workload details. The UI uses these annotations to display build output such as the container image and workload configuration.
The step fetches the current WorkflowRun, adds the annotations, and updates it via `PUT`:
`# Get the current WorkflowRun
WF_RUN_RESPONSE=$(curl -s -w "\n%{http_code}" \
-X GET "${API_URL}/api/v1/namespaces/${NAMESPACE_NAME}/workflowruns/${RUN_NAME}" \
-H "Authorization: Bearer ${ACCESS_TOKEN}")
# Add annotations and update
curl -s -X PUT "${API_URL}/api/v1/namespaces/${NAMESPACE_NAME}/workflowruns/${RUN_NAME}" \
-H "Content-Type: …[truncated]</excerpt>

Use a release-specific ref before publishing this upgrade guide.
versions.githubRef is main, so these commands follow moving component types, build workflows, and workflow templates. A later main change can make the v1.3-to-v1.4 instructions apply assets that do not match the v1.4 installation.
The page is currently marked as pre-release, and no v1.4 ref exists yet. Do not add a nonexistent ref. When v1.4 is released, use its actual release ref for these URLs.

Review comment at @docs/platform-engineer-guide/upgrades/v1.3-to-v1.4.mdx at
line 36:
The upgrade guide’s sample URLs use the moving `versions.githubRef` value; when
v1.4 is released, update those URLs to use the actual v1.4 release ref. Leave
the current pre-release URLs unchanged until that ref exists.
After applying the fix, consider running `coderabbit review --agent` for local
review. Visit https://docs.coderabbit.ai/cli?utm_source=ghpr
Re-applying the v1.4 default component types changes the release hash
of every component that uses them, so autoDeploy creates a new release
for each and binds it to the first environment. Say so in the upgrade
guide.

that line's Workload file is passed too, and --local sets its address.

Apply the CRDs before the control plane upgrade, the component types
after it, and the build workflows together with generate-workload.
Note that older event modules mix line events into the main line, and
list the releaseLine and releaseLineId alert template variables.
Also name the webhook variables incidentEnabled and triggerAiRca, the
keys the observer sets. alertIncidentEnabled and alertTriggerAiRca were
never defined and fail to compile.
