Description

Fixes #3685.

In moveit_py, CollisionResult.contacts and CollisionResult.cost_sources were exposed on the CollisionResult class in collision_common.cpp, but their underlying C++ types (collision_detection::Contact, collision_detection::CostSource, and collision_detection::BodyType) lacked pybind11 bindings. Accessing .contacts or .cost_sources in Python raised:
TypeError: Unable to convert function return value to a Python type!

This PR implements the missing pybind11 bindings:

  • collision_detection::BodyType: enum exposed with ROBOT_LINK, ROBOT_ATTACHED, WORLD_OBJECT.
  • collision_detection::Contact:
    • Fields: body_name_1, body_name_2, body_type_1, body_type_2, depth, pos, normal, percent_interpolation.
    • Property: nearest_points with 2-tuple getter and sequence validation setter.
    • __repr__ and __eq__.
  • collision_detection::CostSource:
    • Fields: aabb_min, aabb_max, cost.
    • Methods/Properties: get_volume(), volume.
    • Operators: __lt__ (preserving set ordering), __eq__, __hash__, and __repr__.
  • collision_detection::CollisionResult:
    • Method: clear() to reset results.
    • Property: contacts returning dict[tuple[str, str], list[Contact]] with roundtrip setter.
    • Property: cost_sources returning list[CostSource] (sorted by cost) with roundtrip setter.
  • Type Stubs & Tests:
    • Updated moveit_py/moveit/core/collision_detection.pyi type definitions.
    • Added unit test suite in moveit_py/test/unit/test_collision_detection.py covering BodyType, Contact, CostSource, CollisionResult, roundtrip property mutation, and live planning_scene.check_collision() contact generation.

📝 Walkthrough

MoveItPy adds Python bindings and typed declarations for collision detection types. CollisionResult exposes contacts and cost sources through Python containers and adds clear(). Unit tests cover these APIs and their use with PlanningScene.

Changes: Collision detection Python API

Layer / File(s) Summary
Expose collision types
moveit_py/moveit/core/collision_detection.pyi, moveit_py/src/moveit/moveit_core/collision_detection/collision_common.cpp, moveit_py/src/moveit/moveit_core/collision_detection/collision_common.hpp, moveit_py/src/moveit/core.cpp, moveit_py/test/unit/test_collision_detection.py
The Python bindings and stubs add BodyType, Contact, and CostSource. Tests cover their values, properties, comparison operations, and other exposed behavior.
Expose CollisionResult operations
moveit_py/moveit/core/collision_detection.pyi, moveit_py/src/moveit/moveit_core/collision_detection/collision_common.cpp, moveit_py/test/unit/test_collision_detection.py
CollisionResult gains clear(). Its contacts property converts between a Python dictionary and the C++ contact map. Its cost_sources property exposes a Python list and assigns values to the C++ set. The stub adds typed fields, and tests cover defaults, round-tripping, and clearing.
Validate PlanningScene collision results
moveit_py/test/unit/test_collision_detection.py, moveit_py/CMakeLists.txt
A test requests contacts and cost sources through PlanningScene.check_collision and checks the returned container types. The test is added to the pytest list.

Explanation

Issue #3685 requires Python access to CollisionResult.contacts and CollisionResult.cost_sources, including the Contact and CostSource types. The PR adds bindings for BodyType, Contact, and CostSource. It maps contacts to a Python dictionary and cost_sources to a list that preserves C++ set ordering. It adds CollisionResult.clear(), roundtrip setters, type stubs, and unit tests for the bindings and collision results.

Exercise the C++-to-Python contact conversion.

The test uses an empty world and the default Panda state. It does not force a collision. The container assertions can pass without converting any Contact or CostSource element.

Add a known collision, then assert that the result contains contacts and that the getter returns Contact objects.

Suggested assertions after adding a collision
         res = CollisionResult()
         scene.check_collision(req, res)

+        self.assertTrue(res.collision)
         self.assertIsInstance(res.contacts, dict)
+        self.assertGreater(len(res.contacts), 0)
+ for key, contacts in res.contacts.items():
+            self.assertIsInstance(key, tuple)
+            self.assertTrue(all(isinstance(c, Contact) for c in contacts))
         self.assertIsInstance(res.cost_sources, list)

The core Panda collision tests already use a deterministic self-colliding state with panda_joint2 = 0.15 and panda_joint4 = -3.0, or add an overlapping world box.

In collision_detection.pyi, declare BodyType members as ClassVar[BodyType] on a plain class and export module-level aliases to align with pybind11 enums and satisfy static type checkers.

In collision_common.cpp, clarify that CollisionResult.cost_sources returns entries ordered descending by total cost (cost * volume) matching CostSource::operator< and MoveIt C++ set semantics.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Synchronize contact_count when assigning contacts.

When a Python caller assigns a nonempty contact map, this setter updates contacts but leaves contact_count at zero or at its previous value. Native collision generators increment contact_count for each stored contact, and the public field is documented as the number of returned contacts. Update the count from the assigned map.

Suggested fix

Assert generated contact data

res.contacts is a dictionary even when the collision call produces no contacts. The test therefore does not verify contact generation. PlanningScene initializes the Panda state with default joint values, and the existing Panda collision test identifies that state as colliding. Assert the collision result and generated contact data.

Suggested fix
