fix: replace duplicated artifact hashes in the artifacts diff - #1093
With cache_artifacts enabled, upload_artifacts_to_table compares the sorted list of newly computed metadata_hash values with the stored list. Once a hash is stored twice (for example after two overlapping uploads to the same schema), the two lists can never be equal again. The diff branch then only inserts hashes missing from the stored list and deletes hashes that are no longer produced, so a duplicated hash is neither removed nor re-inserted. Every following invocation logs [<table>] Artifacts changed. and the duplicate rows stay until someone removes them by hand.
Change
In the diff branch, hashes that appear more than once in the stored list and are still produced by the project are added to the delete list, and their artifacts are added to the insert rows. delete_and_insert already deletes every row with a given hash before inserting, so one upload leaves each artifact stored exactly once, and the next upload takes the "did not change" path again. Duplicated hashes that are no longer produced were already deleted through removed_artifact_hashes.
@masukai suggested in the issue either comparing the hashes as sets or deduplicating the stored hashes. This takes the second route, because comparing as sets would hide the duplicated rows rather than remove them.
The duplicates are found with a small get_duplicated_values list helper (one pass over the stored hashes). Nothing changes when the stored list has no duplicates.
Testing
New integration test test_dbt_artifacts/test_artifacts.py::test_artifacts_diff_removes_duplicated_hashes: uploads artifacts with cache_artifacts on, duplicates every row of dbt_models with a new test macro (duplicate_table_rows), runs again and asserts that no metadata_hash is stored twice. It fails on master and passes with this change on Postgres 15 and DuckDB.
Manual check on Postgres with the integration project: on master, after duplicating dbt_models, three runs in a row log [dbt_models] Artifacts changed. and the table stays at 74 rows / 37 distinct hashes. With this change the first run logs Replacing 37 duplicated artifacts., the table is back to 37 rows, and the next run logs Artifacts did not change.
pre-commit run on the changed files passes.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Artifact uploads using diff mode now handle duplicate metadata hashes in stored records. When a duplicate hash is also present in changed artifacts, the affected records are replaced instead of retained alongside the new records. This keeps the resulting artifact metadata free of duplicate hashes and ensures the stored records reflect the latest artifact data.
When an artifact table holds the same metadata_hash more than once, the
stored hashes never equal the newly computed ones again, so every
upload reports "Artifacts changed" and the duplicate rows are kept.
Delete the rows of duplicated hashes that are still produced and insert
those artifacts again once, so a single upload repairs the table.

Walkthrough
The artifact upload diff now detects stored metadata hashes that occur more than once and overlap with new hashes. It adds the current artifact rows for those hashes to the insertion set and marks the hashes for deletion. An integration test duplicates artifact rows and checks that a later run restores unique hashes.

Summary
Detect and replace duplicated hashes macros/utils/list_utils/get_duplicated_values.sql, macros/edr/dbt_artifacts/upload_artifacts_to_table.sql
The new utility returns values that occur more than once. When a duplicated stored hash also appears among new hashes, the upload macro adds its current rows for insertion and marks the hash for deletion.
Exercise repair in an integration test integration_tests/dbt_project/macros/duplicate_table_rows.sql, integration_tests/tests/test_dbt_artifacts/test_artifacts.py
The test macro duplicates every row in a referenced table. The integration test checks initial hash uniqueness, duplicates the artifact rows, and checks that a later run leaves unique hashes.
No actionable merge-blocking risk remains; the duplicate-repair behavior is covered for the tested artifact path.

Explanation
The title "fix: replace duplicated artifact hashes in the artifacts diff" matches the main change. The PR adds handling for stored metadata hashes that appear more than once during diff mode in upload_artifacts_to_table. Those duplicate rows are then deleted and re-inserted, so one row remains per artifact. The title names the fix, the affected area (artifacts diff), and the subject (duplicated hashes). It is specific enough for a teammate scanning history to understand the primary change. The supporting macros and test are secondary details that the title does not need to cover.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[#1091] The change detects stored metadata_hash values that occur more than once and still exist in the newly computed artifacts. It adds those hashes to the delete list and their current artifact rows to the insert list. The existing delete-and-insert flow therefore removes duplicate rows and stores one row per artifact. Hashes no longer produced remain covered by the existing removal logic. The regression test duplicates dbt_models rows and verifies unique hashes after the next upload. This meets the issue requirement that one upload repairs duplicates and that later uploads can use the unchanged path.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changed production files implement duplicate detection and replacement for the artifact diff path. The new list helper supports that implementation. The integration macro creates the duplicate state for the regression test, and the test verifies the behavior requested by [#1091]. No unrelated hash-serialization change or unrelated production behavior is included.

The uniqueness check still passes when the repair drops some artifacts. For example, a repair that reinserts only part of the duplicated artifacts leaves a unique but shorter table. The test does not check the row count after the repair. Compare the final hash set with the initial hash set so the test detects lost artifacts.

Thanks for working on this, and for picking the "remove the stored duplicates" route. I agree that comparing as sets would only hide the duplicated rows, so repairing them on the next upload is what I was hoping for. I read the diff and it matches my understanding of delete_and_insert (every row with a hash is deleted before the artifact is inserted once), and I like that nothing changes when the stored list has no duplicates. The test also covers the case I cared about: the hash set is the same before and after the repair.
One note for transparency: I reproduced the original problem on master (DuckDB), but I haven't run this branch myself.
Thanks for reading through it, and for confirming the reproduction on master. On the test: 4729557 added an assertion that the hash set after the repair equals the one before, so the test now fails on lost artifacts as well as on leftover duplicates. CI is waiting on the fork workflow approval; happy to address anything that turns up once it runs.
