PyPSA-USA: An Open-Source Energy System Optimization Model for the United States

See our readthedocs for installation and usage instructions.

PyPSA-USA is an open-source power systems model of the bulk transmission systems in the United States. This workflow draws from the work of pypsa-eur to build a highly configurable power systems model that can be used for capacity expansion modeling, production cost simulation, and power flow analysis. It can optionally be extended with sector coupling — adding the natural gas network and residential, commercial, industrial, and transportation demands — for full energy system studies.

Quickstart

With uv installed:

git clone https://github.com/PyPSA/pypsa-usa.git
cd pypsa-usa
bash init_pypsa_usa.sh # seed the per-user config files into workflow/config
cd workflow
uv run snakemake -j1 --configfile config/config.default.yaml

See the documentation for full installation instructions (environment setup, solver, EIA API key) and usage details.
